White
Jude Goodwin
I'm taking a glass of wine to bed.
It isn't my first companion,
nor the only one.
There have been boys,
followed by men;
three babies, intent on life.
The last one stayed for five years
almost outlasting her father.
These days it's mostly wine
and books
written in the language of relationships,
words to penetrate the bad places.
I've made everything white:
the sheets and duvets and cases.
Now nested and propped
I can see the doorway
and marvel at its absolute emptiness.
