we, mother, daughter

Kim Khanh Nguyen

carry yarns that knot our lives uncomfortably together
to pull and tear and push apart til seams are spent and fingers raw,
open hands we draw across our wrinkled hearts.

we, mother, daughter
cannot help but claw,
brick beneath our nails and grit against our grinding teeth.

we, mother, daughter
sing the same songs over and over
tarantula and minor E, willow songs that whip the night.

we, mother, woman,
we sew the pieces of broken bruised hopes into the patches of our knees
and kneel to bear the weight that only we,
woman against woman
will dip our heads and spread our hips to bear,
sip the bitter soup we pour ourselves
cold bowls passing silent, ripening bosoms.
