Oddling tree--no blossom

Dorothy Doyle Mienko

I beg them to save the blue
spruce with two tops-

to dig it carefully from the ground
protecting its roots: to replant it for me.

When winter comes, snow will settle
onto its branches-

sparrows will shelter
inside its covers.

The spirits in the spirit house
will put off their hungers

to listen as wind
billows its skirts.

And the stars: they
will not forget to drop

a shine over its needles.
This tree, I tell them,

is like lovers with nothing
but distance between them.

Dorothy Doyle Mienko's poetry has appeared in online and in print journals such as: Niederngasse, Stirring, Two River View, Adirondak Review, Miller's Pond, Sometimes City, and in many others.
